Road Atlanta, GA. - Archangel Motorsports is two-for-two with their second podium finish at their second American Le Mans Series event - last weekend's Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio at the Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course in Lexington, Ohio. With their 2nd in class victory at Mid-Ohio, and their class win at Sears Point, it seems that Archangel's move to the ALMS has been very wise and fruitful. Back-to-back wins are no stranger to Archangel - the two-time back-to-back Rolex SRP-II Champions.
The team's #13 Marshall Cooke/FAC LMP 675, with Ben Devlin and Bret Arsenault sharing stints, took the checkered flag 2nd in class and 14th overall in a hotly contested competition in the 675 class with both Bucknum Racing and Knighthawk Racing. Devlin started the race in the Lola B2K/40, with the new Marshall Cooke power plant, and ran for 53 minutes before turning over the reigns to teammate Arsenault. Together, Devlin was able to secure a 1st in class position and Arsenault was maintaining it. At 53 minutes in to Arsenault's stint, an off-course excursion into the gravel at turn 11 dashed the team's hopes of a 1st in class result and relinquished the lead to the Bucknum team. At 3:58, Devlin once again got behind the wheel and fought valiantly for the remainder of the race to regain the lead - almost doing it- but finishing second.
"We had a one-lap lead, everything was perfect, the motor was running great," said team owner Mike Johnson. "then a little driver error and unfortunately we got stuck in the gravel. By the time we got out of that we were down too much to regain the lead before the race ended. We're obviously happy with the result though - we'll take second place any day."
"It was a good race. It's nice to have a race where you're neck to neck," says Ben Devlin. "I like it when the pressure is on, like the pressure from Knighthawk right behind us. But I just tried to keep my head and drive through it - I just kept consistent - that's what we needed to do. They managed to get stuck in some traffic - and we made it good through the traffic - and that's what's racing is about. It was great."
"The crew did a great job on the car," said Bret Arsenault. "It was really hot today and we were a little worried about the heat. Unfortunately, I made a driving mistake that ended up costing us the lead. My hat's off to my teammate Ben for fighting so hard for position at the end of the race and for delivering our second place finish."
"We're very pleased with the way the car ran. The engine went great. The cooling was good," said James Cooke, co -owner of Marshall Cooke and developer of the teams engine. "We've still got room for improvement in the cooler - so we have more power yet to come form the engine. It was very impressive. A second place the second time out - you can't be unhappy with that."
